Description
Solar PV DC Disconnect Switch
A 4-pole, 1500 VDC quick-disconnect isolator built to cut DC power between your solar array, charge controller, batteries and inverter in a single rotary action. Outdoor-rated to IP66 with a lockable SAFE-LOCK mechanism, this solar PV DC disconnect switch is sized for modern residential and commercial off-grid and grid-tied installations where fast, safe isolation is non-negotiable.
Fast, lockable DC isolation in one action
A solar PV DC disconnect switch is the safety component that lets you de-energize the DC side of a solar system before any service, inspection or fault response. With a single rotary action this DC isolator switch breaks all four poles at once, disconnecting two separate PV strings from the charge controller, battery bank and inverter simultaneously. The result is a clean, deliberate shutdown that protects both the installer and the downstream equipment.
Engineered for off-grid and grid-tied applications alike, the 4-pole PV disconnect handles the high open-circuit voltages of modern panel arrays and suppresses the switching arc in under three milliseconds. An isolated SAFE-LOCK mechanism with three rotational positions and a padlock lockout point keeps the switch tamper-resistant and lock-out/tag-out ready for maintenance.
Where this disconnect switch fits
Because it is rated to 1500 VDC and sealed to IP66, this solar PV DC disconnect switch is suited to permanent outdoor mounting across a wide range of system sizes:
- Residential rooftop and ground-mount solar arrays requiring a code-compliant DC isolation point
- Off-grid cabins, RVs and remote sites where the array must be isolated from batteries and inverters for service
- Commercial and agricultural PV installations running dual-string inputs to a single combiner or controller
- Hybrid and grid-tied systems that need a fast, lockable shutoff ahead of the charge controller or inverter
Key features
- 4-pole, 2-string switching — isolates two PV strings at once with a single rotary throw.
- 1500 VDC system rating — 55 A conventional thermal current (Ith); operational current derates with voltage, delivering 32 A at 1500 VDC in 4-pole wiring (full table below).
- Sub-3 ms arc suppression — extinguishes the load-break arc almost instantly for safer disconnection.
- IP66 weatherproof enclosure — outdoor-rated for permanent exterior installation in harsh conditions.
- Isolated SAFE-LOCK — three rotational positions with a padlock lockout point reduce tampering and support lock-out/tag-out.
- 8 kV impulse withstand — robust insulation rating for high-voltage DC strings.

Rated current by system voltage
The rated operational current (Ie) of this DC isolator depends on system voltage and wiring configuration. In standard 2-pole and 4-pole wiring the current derates as voltage rises; wiring the poles in series (4T / 4B / 4S) holds 50 A all the way to 1500 VDC.

Frequently asked questions
What is a solar PV DC disconnect switch used for?
It provides a single, lockable point to de-energize the DC side of a solar system — isolating the PV array from the charge controller, batteries and inverter so the system can be safely serviced or shut down in a fault.
How many PV strings can the RS-i4 isolate?
As a 4-pole switch it breaks two independent PV strings at the same time with one rotary action.
Is the RS-i4 rated 32 A or 55 A?
Both figures are correct and appear on the same unit. 55 A is the conventional thermal current (Ith), reached at 800 VDC. The rated operational current derates as system voltage rises: at the full 1500 VDC it is 32 A in standard 2-pole or 4-pole wiring, or 50 A when the poles are wired in series (4T / 4B / 4S).
Can it be installed outdoors?
Yes. The IP66-rated enclosure is built for permanent outdoor mounting and exposure to rain, dust and harsh weather.
